Frequently Asked Questions

Here you'll find the most frequently asked questions about self drive horsebox hire. If you have any further questions, drop us an email or give us a call and we will be happy to help find the solution for you.

Must I provide my own insurance cover to drive the horsebox?

No, insurance is provided as part of the package and is fully comprehensive.

What age must you be to drive the horsebox?

You must be between the ages of 25 and 70 in order to comply with the available insurance policy.

What type of driving license do I need?

Contrary to popular belief, you are only required to hold a Full UK driving license. We do require that you have held this license since 1997, again for insurance purposes. We also require that you have no more than 2 minor offences on your driving license.

Do we get roadside assistance if we breakdown?

Yes, in the unlikely event that the horsebox breaks down, you will be provided with 24 hour roadside relay through a nationwide roadside rescue organisation; this is covered as part of the insurance policy provided. Can another person drive the vehicle other than the named driver? No, unfortunately, the only person who is covered by the insurance policy is the named driver, whose driving license we have received a copy of. We can, however, contact the insurance company to look into the possibility of insuring another driver, but this will be down to the discretion of the insurance company and may incur further charges.

Will my horse(s) need to be insured?

Yes, it is absolutely mandatory that your horse(s) be insured and that we have details of this insurance policy presented to us upon collection of the horsebox. If you are using the horsebox to collect a new horse, it will be necessary to present the new insurance cover note/document at the time of collection. It is also mandatory for each horse passport to be presented at time of hire. Again if you are collecting a new horse, you will only need the passport when you are transporting, so be sure to collect this from the new owner.

What security features does the horsebox have?

The horsebox is fitted with both an immobiliser and alarm

Do we need to put fuel into the horsebox?

We will provide you with the first full tank of diesel and then it is up to you to refill it. We also ask that you return the box with a full tank of diesel and that you never allow the fuel tank to be less than a quarter full, as this can lead to mechanical fault.

Are there any specific times for collecting and returning the horsebox?

The depot is open for morning collection/returns between 8-10am and evening collection/returns between 4-6pm

What documents will I need to bring to the depot upon collection of the horsebox?

You will need to bring the original paper and photo id of your driving license, proof of address (in the form of a current utility bill), your horse insurance and horse passport, and a cheque for £500 which acts as a damage deposit – obviously if the horsebox comes back in one piece with no damage, you will receive your cheque back! Please check out our terms and conditions prior to hire

Do we need to clean the horsebox before we return it?

All you need to do is remove the muck from the back and all your personal belongings and rubbish and then we’ll do the sanitising. If you wish to return the horsebox without removing your rubbish/horse dung we provide a valet service at the price of £49.99.
